Mayra Valenzuela scored in the second minute of double-overtime to lift the South Mountain Community College women's soccer team to a 3-2 over Gateway Community College on Oct. 23. Valenzuela's second goal of the game lifted the Cougars to a victory on Sophomore Day against the visiting Geckos.
Victoria Nagrete opened the match with a goal in the 15th minute. Seven minutes later, Valenzuela doubled the Cougars' lead.
However, the Geckos battled back and tied the match in the second half with a pair of goals. The equalizer came in the 75th minute and forced the extra frames.
In goal, Mackenzie Houston made 12 saves to pick up the win for SMCC.
