SMCC Beach Volleyball Battles with Wayne State, Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College beach volleyball team battled with Wayne State College (NE) and Mesa CC in a pair of duals at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz., on Mar. 9. After a difficult result against the Wildcats, the Cougars put up a valiant effort against their conference rivals but fell 3-2 as the third pairs match went into extra time. 

Against NCAA Division II Wayne State (NE), the Cougars fell in straight sets in all five contests. They rebounded with a strong performance against Mesa CC. 

Sophomore Kristine Garcia and freshman Amaya Evans won their No. 1 pairs match 21-12 and 21-18 to improve to 3-7 on the season. Freshmen Alexa Wasil and Emee Fellens won on court four with a 21-13, 21-18 to improve to 2-4 on the season. 

On court three, freshmen Nichole Gary and Rylee Pitts suffered a 21-12, 19-21, 16-14 loss that ultimately decided the contest. The duo is now 5-5 on the season, leading SMCC in dual victories. 

Freshman Daisy Motes, freshman Shandi Allison and sophomore Emily Wilson competed in both matches, and freshman Shayna Simmers played on court five with Allison against Mesa CC.
