Cougar Baseball Drops Pair of Non-Conference Home Games

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (6-5) lost 8-3 to Chandler-Gilbert CC on Feb. 8 and 8-6 to Paradise Valley CC on Feb. 9 in a pair of home non-conference contests. Against the Coyotes, Connor Schneider had a double, and Gustavo Sosa hit a triple, but five errors undid SMCC in its 2022 home opener. Against the Pumas, the Cougars committed six errors and could not overcome a four-run, first-inning deficit.

The Coyotes built an early lead and took advantage of five Cougar miscues to win 8-3. SMCC managed three hits in the loss, with Kyle Alexander picking up the team's third hit.

Schnieder finished 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk in addition to the double. Brian Leon and Josaiah Estrella scored run, and Drew Bond and Quade Swearingen had RBIs.

Alec Stanfield (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars. He allowed seven hits, and four earned runs in 5.0 innings to go with four strikeouts. Eric Perez tossed two innings of relief with three strikeouts, and Esteban Hernandez and Jacob Beltran tossed an inning of relief.

Paradise Valley CC Recap

The Cougars made six errors in the field and could not overcome an early deficit despite a late rally. PVCC scored seven runs over the first five innings and led 7-3 into the seventh. SMCC scored three times in the seventh, but PVCC tacked on an insurance run and captured the 8-6 victory.

Alexander led the Cougars with a two-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs, two doubles and an RBI. Jacob Alexander hit a two-run triple, and Sosa added a pair of RBIs and a hit. Gillis Champagne and Taylor Tractenberg scored runs for the Cougars, and Champagne added a stolen base.

Robert Schardt (0-1) took the loss on the mound for SMCC, allowing three earned runs and two hits. Matthew Martinez tossed 3.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts and three hits. Steven Vasquez tossed two innings of relief, Max Maholland threw 1.1 innings, and Drew Bond got the final two outs for SMCC.
