Cougars Fall Twice at Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (6-7, 0-2 ACCAC) lost 7-2 and 8-5 at Arizona Western in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader in Yuma, Ariz., on Feb. 12. In the first game, freshman left fielder Brian Leon went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored, but the Matadors scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed. In the second game, sophomore right fielder Paul Sachen led the Cougars with three hits, including a double, but Arizona Western scored three times in the fourth and added insurance runs late to secure the win.

Game One Recap

The Matadors scored five runs in the first, although three were unearned, to take an early lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore Nolan Livsey (1-1) allowed two earned runs and three hits with two strikeouts to take the loss. Sophomore Carter Krosky tossed the final 5.1 innings and finished with eight strikeouts and two earned runs.

Leon's two-run blast came in the sixth inning after Arizona Western had extended its advantage to 7-0. Freshman Jayden Smith joined Leon with a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3. Sophomore Taylor Tractenberg hit a triple, and Connor SchneiderKyle Alexander and Clayton Kempski had base hits.

Game Two Recap

SMCC scored a run in the first three innings but trailed 5-3 after four frames. The Cougars scored a run in the sixth, but the Matadors matched it added runs in the seventh and eighth to clinch the sweep.

Sachen was 3-for-4 with a double, a run, a stolen base and a walk, and Kempski went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Schneider, Drew Bond and Gillis Champagne hit doubles in the loss, and Kyle Alexander added a stolen base.

Raul Garayzar (0-2) took the loss on the mound for SMCC. He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts. Ryan Figueroa tossed the final 4.1 innings, fanning seven with two earned runs.
