SMCC Baseball Snaps Skid, Downs Benedictine-Mesa JV

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (7-7) snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated the Benedictine University-Mesa JV squad 10-0 (8 innings) Tuesday, Feb. 15. Freshman Gustavo Sosa finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles, and the Cougars stole seven bases to post the shutout victory.

The Cougars finished with 11 hits and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, thanks to five runs in the second and two in the third. SMCC added a run in the fifth and two in the eighth to defeat the Redhawks.

Eight Cougar had a hit in addition to Sosa's performance. Freshman Jayden Smith finished 1-for-3 with a triple, two stolen bases, a run scored and two RBIs. Fellow rookie Kyle Alexander and sophomore Paul Sachen also had two stolen bases, and Alexander scored three runs while Sachen had an RBI and drew a walk.

Sophomore Taylor Tractenberg had the team's fifth double, freshman Jacob Alexander had two RBIs and freshman Quade Swearingen scored a pair of runs. 

Freshman Drew Bond started the game for SMCC and tossed two innings, and had two strikeouts. He also had a base hit, scored a run and stole a base. Freshman Jacob Beltran (1-0) earned the win on the mound with an inning of relief. Drew WoodyNick WallerstedtEric PerezAlec Stanfield and Esteban Hernandez also tossed an inning out of the bullpen for the Cougars.
