SMCC Baseball Snaps Skid, Downs Benedictine-Mesa JV

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (7-7) snapped a four-game losing streak and defeated the Benedictine University-Mesa JV squad 10-0 (8 innings) Tuesday, Feb. 15. Freshman Gustavo Sosa finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles, and the Cougars stole seven bases to post the shutout victory.
The Cougars finished with 11 hits and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, thanks to five runs in the second and two in the third. SMCC added a run in the fifth and two in the eighth to defeat the Redhawks.
Eight Cougar had a hit in addition to Sosa's performance. Freshman Jayden Smith finished 1-for-3 with a triple, two stolen bases, a run scored and two RBIs. Fellow rookie Kyle Alexander and sophomore Paul Sachen also had two stolen bases, and Alexander scored three runs while Sachen had an RBI and drew a walk.
Sophomore Taylor Tractenberg had the team's fifth double, freshman Jacob Alexander had two RBIs and freshman Quade Swearingen scored a pair of runs.
Freshman Drew Bond started the game for SMCC and tossed two innings, and had two strikeouts. He also had a base hit, scored a run and stole a base. Freshman Jacob Beltran (1-0) earned the win on the mound with an inning of relief. Drew Woody, Nick Wallerstedt, Eric Perez, Alec Stanfield and Esteban Hernandez also tossed an inning out of the bullpen for the Cougars.
