Cougars Split ACCAC Doubleheader at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (10-8, 3-3 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Central Arizona on Feb. 22. In the first game, the Vaqueros broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth and limited SMCC to hits in a 4-1 victory. In the second game, the Cougars struck for four runs over the first two innings and totaled 14 hits in an 8-4 win.

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored their lone run in the sixth but could not overcome four Central Arizona runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

Jayden SmithKyle AlexanderCarter Richey and Jacob Alexander had base hits for the Cougars. Smith recorded an RBI while Alexander and Richey produced doubles. Josaiah Estrella scored the Cougar run.

Raul Garayzar (0-3) took the loss on the mound for SMCC. He went 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and one unearned run. Eric PerezAlec StanfieldDrew Woody and Charlie Deeds saw time in relief.

Game Two Recap

The SMCC offense found its groove in the second contest, totaling 14 hits and scoring five runs over the first three frames. The Cougars added three insurance runs in the eighth to secure the victory.

Smith finished 4-for-5 from his leadoff spot, scoring two runs and driving in one. He added two stolen bases to raise his season total to nine.

Batting second, Brian Leon went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two walks, while Richey had two hits, a stolen base and an RBI.

Drew Bond had two hits, a double and recorded the save with 2.0 innings of relief work. He had five strikeouts and allowed two hits.

Gillis ChampagneEsteban Hernandez and Kyle Alexander had base hits and scored runs, and Hernandez and Taylor Tractenberg had RBIs.

Jacob Beltran (4-0) earned the win on the mound for SMCC. He pitched 3.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts and one unearned run. Robert Schardt started the game with five strikeouts, and two earned runs in 3.0 innings.

Matthew Martinez recorded two outs, and Bond tossed the final two innings to post the save.
