SMCC, Pima CC Baseball Split ACCAC Doubleheader

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (12-10, 5-5 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Pima CC on Mar. 1. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in game one as Jayden Smith and Carter Richey had a pair of base hits in a 4-3 victory. Gustavo Sosa hit his first home run of the season in the second game, and Jacob Alexander added two hits, but the Aztecs held off an SMCC rally in the ninth inning to win 4-2.

Game One Recap 

SMCC scored a pair of runs in the first, but Pima CC tied the game at 2-2 in the third. The Cougars added runs in the fifth and sixth and slammed the door on a Pima CC rally to earn the 4-3 victory.

Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. He is batting .463 with 20 runs, three doubles, 11 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 20 games this season. Smith leads the ACCAC in batting average and is tied for eighth in runs.

Richey finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Sosa and Connor Schneider picked up RBIs in the win. Schneider also had a stolen base, a run and an RBI, and Esteban Hernandez extended his hitting streak to four games.

Raul Garayzar (1-3) earned his first win of the season on the mound, fanning three with three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Matthew Martinez worked 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts, and Drew Bond recorded the final out of the game to record his second save of the season.

Game Two Recap

The Aztecs scored a run in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. They added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings and held off an SMCC rally in the ninth to win 4-2 and halve the doubleheader.

Sosa hit a solo blast and finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Alexander went 2-for-4 with a double, and five other Cougars had a base hit. Smith had an RBI, and Josaiah Estrella scored a run and stole a base. Kyle Alexander had the team's second stolen base.

Robert Schardt started the game for SMCC and tossed 1.2 innings with one earned run, while Charlie Deeds (0-1) took the loss with an inning of work and an unearned run. Jacob Beltran tossed 4.1 innings of relief, scattering two hits while fanning two. Eric Perez tossed the eighth inning for the Cougars.
