Baseball Falls Twice to Cochise College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (12-12, 5-7 ACCAC) lost 6-5 (7 innings) and 11-9 to Cochise College in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Mar. 5 in Douglas, Ariz. The Apaches scratched across a run in the seventh to win the first game 6-5 and used an eight-run sixth in the second game to claim an 11-9 victory and sweep the doubleheader.

Game One Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 3-1 lead through three innings and reclaimed a 5-4 advantage after its half of the sixth. However, Cochise College scored a run in the sixth and seventh to win the opening contest.

Jayden Smith and Carter Richey had two hits for the Cougars. Smith scored a run and had an RBI, and Richey had a pair of RBIs.

Gustavo Sosa and Taylor Tractenberg recorded RBIs, and Paul Sachen stole a pair of bases. Josaiah EstrellaKyle Alexander and Sosa scored runs for the Cougars.

Drew Bond took the loss for the Cougars, giving up an unearned run in the seventh inning. Ryan Figueroa started the game and had six strikeouts, and four earned runs in six innings of work.

Game Two Recap 

SMCC held a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Apaches responded with eight runs in the frame to tie the game and scored two in the eighth to take the 11-9 victory.

Connor Schneider and Kyle Alexander had three hits for SMCC in defeat. Schneider went 3-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, while Alexander also blasted a couple of solo shots and finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Sachen and Richey also hit solo home runs for SMCC, and Jacob Alexander picked up a double. Quade Swearingen added an RBI and a stolen base.

Matthew Martinez (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars. He threw two innings of relief and allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts. Carter Krosky started the game for SMCC and tossed 5.0 innings with four K's and three earned runs. Jacob Beltran also saw time in relief.
