Cougars Fall Twice to Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (12-14, 5-9 ACCAC) lost 7-6 (15 innings) and 11-8 to Phoenix College in a pair of Arizona Community College Athletic Conference games on Mar. 8-9. The Cougars scored three runs in the ninth to force extra frames in the first game, but the Bears eventually prevailed with the winning run in the 15th. SMCC jumped out to a 6-3 lead through three innings in the second game, but Phoenix College scored six runs over the final four innings to win 11-8.

Game One Recap

SMCC totaled 17 hits and rallied to tie the game in the ninth, but the host Bears won in the sixth extra frame.

Paul Sachen and Gustavo Sosa had four hits to lead the Cougars. Sosa had a double and scored a run, while Sachen scored a run and drew a walk.

Carter Richey hit a pair of doubles and added an RBI, and Connor Schneider and Kyle Alexander also doubled to go with a run scored and an RBI. Jayden Smith had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run, and Esteban Hernandez scored a run and drew a pair of walks.

Drew Bond (0-2) took the loss on the mound, tossing 6.2 innings of relief with 11 strikeouts. Raul Garayzar started the game for SMCC, and he allowed three earned runs in 1.2 innings of work. Steven VasquezCharlie DeedsJosaiah EstrellaNick Wallerstedt and Eric Perez saw time in the relief.

Game Two Recap

The Cougars led 4-2 and 6-3, but the Bears rallied for five runs over the final two innings to win the contest. 

Jacob Alexander finished 4-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, a stolen base and four two-out RBIs. Richey hit a solo home run in the ninth, his third of the year, and added three runs, two RBIs and a double.

Nick Wolfrey, Smith and Schneider had two hits in the game. Smith scored a run and stole a base, Wolfrey doubled and drove in two runs, and Schneider scored a pair of runs with a stolen base.
