SMCC Baseball Splits Non-Conference Games with Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (16-16) split a non-conference doubleheader at Glendale CC on Mar. 18, falling 9-5 in game one before winning 3-1 in the second contest. Jayden Smith and Gustavo Sosa had two hits in the first game, including a Sosa home run, but a seven-run fourth lifted the Gauchos to the victory. In the second game, SMCC scored a pair of runs in the third, added an insurance run in the seventh and held off GCC for a 3-1 victory. 

Game One Recap

After GCC scored a pair of runs in the first, SMCC responded with three runs in the second and led 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. GCC pushed seven runs across in the fourth, and SMCC generated single runs in the fifth and sixth to fall 9-5. 

Smith went 2-for-4 with a run, and Sosa finished 2-for-3 with two runs and his third home run of the season. Jacob Alexander hit his fifth double of the season, and Drew Bond had an RBI and scored a run. 

Drew Woody (1-1) took the loss for SMCC with three innings on the hill. He had five strikeouts and allowed three hits, and one earned run. Carter KroskyCharlie Deeds and Gillis Champagne all saw time in relief. 

Game Two Recap 

SMCC broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the third and added an insurance run in the seventh to post a 3-1 victory.

Ryan Figueroa (4-1) threw the final 4.1 innings to earn the win for the Cougars. He had five strikeouts and allowed five hits and a run. Eric Perez started the game for SMCC and tossed 2.2 innings with four strikeouts and two hits. 

Connor Schneider and Smith led the Cougars with two hits. Smith scored a run, hit a double and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Schneider drew a walk and stole a base.  

Carter Richey hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season, and Sosa added a double. Taylor TractenbergBrian Leon and Bond all had base hits in the win.
