Cougar Baseball Battles with Glendale CC in ACCAC Series

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (18-18, 8-12 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference two-game series with Glendale CC, winning 6-5 on Mar. 25 before falling 5-1 on Mar. 26. In the victory, Brian Leon led SMCC with three hits and two runs scored as the Cougars led early and held off a Gaucho rally for the 6-5 win. Drew Bond and Jayden Smith had two hits in the second game, but five errors helped GCC score five runs over the final four innings to secure the 5-1 victory. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings and led 6-1 after six. The Gauchos scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth and ninth before SMCC slammed the door on a 6-5 victory. 

Ryan Figueroa (5-1) earned his fifth win with 7.0 innings of work. He fanned four, walked one and allowed two earned runs. Charlie Deeds pitched the eighth to register a hold, and Matthew Martinez recorded the save by tossing the ninth. 

Leon finished 3-for-4 with two runs, scoring once on a suicide squeeze bunt by Clayton Kempski. Smith went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, and Carter Richey added a solo home run, his fifth of the year. Drew Bond recorded a double, an RBI and scored a run, and Esteban Hernandez scored a run.

Game Two Recap

SMCC held a 1-0 lead through four innings, but GCC scored two in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to post a 5-1 victory. The Gauchos had 12 base hits, and the Cougars committed five errors in the loss. 

Smith and Bond had two hits to lead SMCC, and Connor Schneider had an RBI double to score Esteban Hernandez in the third. 

Josaiah Estrella started the game for the Cougars, fanning two with no runs in 2.0 innings of work. Bond (1-3) took the loss with 4.1 frames of relief with a K and two earned runs. Jacob Beltran tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run with one strikeout.
