Arizona Western Takes Pair of ACCAC Games from SMCC Baseball

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (20-24, 10-18 ACCAC) lost both games of an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader to Arizona Western on April 9. SMCC led 2-1 after four innings, but the Matadors scored five in the fifth and two in the seventh to post a 7-2 victory in the first contest. In the second game, the Cougars led 4-0 after four and 5-1 after five, but Arizona Western's two runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh proved too much in a 13-8 loss. 

Game One Recap

Gustavo Sosa led off the game with a solo home run, but the Cougars could not sustain the early momentum in a 7-2 loss. SMCC would add a run in the second inning as Connor Schneider scored. He would add a stolen base and a single in the loss. 

Paul Sachen had a pair of hits for SMCC, including a double, and Esteban Hernandez and Nick Wolfrey also produced base hits. Hernandez added his 11th stolen base of the year in the loss. 

Drew Bond (1-4) took the loss for SMCC on the mound. He started and went 4.2 innings with four K's and four earned runs. Matthew Martinez and Alec Stanfield saw time in relief, with Stanfield tossing two innings with four strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

Brian Leon hit his third home run of the season, and the Cougars led, 6-4, heading into the seventh. However, the Matadors scored seven runs in the frame and added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to record a 13-8 victory. 

Leon blasted a solo home run in the second and added a single. Jayden Smith had a pair of base hits, scored a run and had an RBI, and Sosa and Hernandez scored twice. 

Carter Richey and Quade Swearingen had two-run doubles for SMCC, and Richey added a stolen base. 

Gillis Champagne (0-1) took the loss for SMCC. He started the seventh and allowed three earned runs. Ryan Figueroa started the game for the Cougars and went 4.2 innings with six K's and one earned run. 

Jacob Beltran tossed 1.1 innings of relief, Eric Perez got a pair of outs, and Josaiah Estrella threw the final 2.1 innings for SMCC.
