SMCC Baseball Splits Season Series with Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (24-26, 12-20 ACCAC) split a midweek Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home series with Central Arizona on April 19 and 20. In the first game, the Vaqueros jumped all over SMCC, taking a 19-6 victory. In the second contest, SMCC held on for a 6-5 win to halve the season series with Central Arizona. 

Game One Recap

The Vaqueros finished with 20 hits, including 12 doubles, to defeat the Cougars 19-6. Central Arizona scored multiple runs in five frames and added six runs in the ninth. 

Freshman Carter Richey finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored, a stolen base and a double. Sophomore Paul Sachen also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two runs and a double. 

Freshman Jayden Smith had a double and scored two runs, and Taylor Tractenberg added the Cougars' fourth double. 

Freshman Raul Garayzar took the loss on the mound for SMCC. He went three innings with four K's and five earned runs. Drew WoodyMatthew MartinezEric PerezGillis ChampagneJosaiah EstrellaNick Wallerstedt and Robert Schardt saw time in relief. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-0 after six frames. In the seventh, Central Arizona hit a 3-run home run to close the gap to 4-3, but the Cougars responded with two runs. South Mountain CC quickly got the first two outs of the ninth and then slammed the door on a two-out CAC rally to post the 6-5 victory. 

Carter Krosky (4-3) earned the win on the mound with a solid performance. He allowed two hits and one run in six innings to go with five strikeouts. Charlie DeedsMatthew Martinez and Jacob Beltran saw time in relief, and Beltran got the final out of the game with a K to record his first save of the year. 

Gustavo Sosa and Smith led the Cougars with a pair of base hits. Smith led off the first with a single and scored on an RBI double from Sosa. Josaiah Estrella scored a pair of runs as a courtesy runner for Sosa. 

Paul Sachen added a sac fly, and Connor Schneider executed a suicide squeeze to pick up a crucial RBI. Taylor Tractenberg hit a single and then scored from first on a throwing error on a pick-off attempt. 

Brian Leon drew three walks, stole a pair of bases and scored a run for SMCC.
