Cougar Baseball Splits ACCAC Doubleheader with Pima CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (26-28, 14-22 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader against Pima CC on April 26. The Cougars won the first game 8-3 behind a home run from Drew Bond, doubles from Carter Richey and Connor Schneider and solid work out of the bullpen from Matthew Martinez and Raul Garayzar. In the second game, the Aztecs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and led 7-2 after six, but put the game out of reach with a 10-run seventh inning to post a 17-2 victory. 

Game One Recap

SMCC used a six-run third and added two runs in the fourth to post an 8-3 victory. Bond finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a solo home run, and six other Cougars added a base hit. 

Richey finished 1-for-2 with a double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base, while Schneider was 1-for-3 with a two-run double. Paul Sachen scored a pair of runs and had a stolen base, and Taylor Tractenberg added a stolen base and a run. 

In the victory, Brian Leon and Jayden Smith added a run, a hit, and an RBI, and Gustavo Sosa recorded a sac fly. 

Martinez (2-4) earned his second win of the season with an inning of relief with one strikeout. Esteban Hernandez started the game for SMCC and went 3.1 innings with two K's and three earned runs. Garayzar tossed the final 2.2 innings, did not allow a hit and had five strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

The Aztecs scored a run in the first three frames and led 7-2 after six. They then scored 10 in the seventh to post a 17-2 victory. 

Quade Swearingen and Sosa hit doubles for the Cougars. Sosa scored a run and had an RBI, and Luis Garcia added a hit and scored a run. Sachen, Bond and Tractenberg added base hits. 

Carter Krosky (4-4) took the loss for SMCC. He started and went five innings with two strikeouts and three earned runs. Jacob BeltranJosaiah Estrella and Drew Woody saw time in relief.
