SMCC Baseball Splits Four-Game Series at Southern Nevada

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (10-2) split a four-game series at Southern Nevada on Feb. 10 and 11 in Henderson, Nev. The Coyotes posted a pair of wins on Feb. 10, handing SMCC 11-10 (8) and 11-4 defeats. The Cougars rebounded the next day with 12-4 and 9-5 victories to split the road series. 

Feb. 10 Doubleheader Recap 

After SMCC struck for five in the first and one in the second, the Cougars led 10-7 after the top of the sixth. However, the Coyotes rallied for three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to post the 11-10 victory. 

Freshman Jaden Miranda and sophomore Kyle Alexander led SMCC with two hits in the loss. Miranda had a pair of RBIs, a stolen base and scored a run, and Alexander scored a run. 

Sophomore Carter Richey hit a solo home run for SMCC, sophomore Jayden Smith scored a pair of runs and walked twice, and sophomore Core Jackson scored a pair of runs, stole a base and added an RBI. 

Freshman Karsen Waslefsky scored a run and drove in a pair, and freshman Sam Christiansen posted a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored.  

Sophomore Jaxon Jelkin started the game for SMCC on the mound. He went 4.2 innings with five hits, six earned runs and six strikeouts. Freshman Austin Balmes recorded an out, and sophomore Matthew Martinez tossed the final 2.2 innings with four earned runs and five strikeouts to take the loss. 

In the second game, SMCC scored a run in the first, but CSN responded with two in the second and one in the third. After the Cougars tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, the Coyotes scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth to eventually pull out the 11-4 victory. 

Sophomore Michael Diaz and Jackson led SMCC with two hits apiece. Diaz had a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI, while Jackson scored a run and added a double. 

Freshman Dominic Chacon added the Cougars' fourth double and an RBI, and Waslefsky scored a run. 

Freshman Nikolas Miller took the loss on the mound with 4.0 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts. Sophomore Matthew Lighthall tossed the final two innings for SMCC and fanned four to go with four earned runs. 

Feb. 11 Doubleheader Recap

The Cougars rebounded with a 12-4 victory in game one of the Feb. 11 doubleheader. Trailing 3-2 at the start of the fourth, SMCC scored nine runs in the fourth and added one in the fifth to post a 12-4 victory. 

Four Cougars posted multi-hit efforts in the win: sophomore Kenneth Jimenez, sophomore Connor Schneider, Smith and Richey. 

Jimenez went 3-for-5 with a run and four RBIs, and Schneider was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs, three RBIs and a walk. 

Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases, and Richey was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and two walks. 

Alexander added a run and an RBI, Christiansen had a hit and an RBI, Miranda scored a run, Waslefsky scored a run, and Jackson scored twice in the win. 

Sophomore Raul Garayzar recorded his first win of the year with five innings of work. He worked around six hits, three earned runs and four walks to fan five Coyotes. Balmes recorded an out, and sophomore Josaiah Estrella threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing a hit with one strikeout. 

In the second game, SMCC led 8-1 after seven innings. Southern Nevada scored three in the eighth to draw within 8-4, but SMCC snuffed out the rally in the ninth after one run scored to record a 9-5 victory. 

Waslefsky led SMCC with three hits and finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base. Chacon and Diaz doubled, with Chacon scoring a pair of runs and Diaz adding a sac bunt.  

Miranda was 1-for-3 with two runs, a sac bunt and an RBI, and sophomore Landen Argabright had an RBI single. Schneider scored a run, Jimenz added an RBI and a run, and Smith had a pair of hits and RBIs. 

Sophomore Jacob Beltran improved to 3-0 on the season with 5.2 innings of work to earn the win on the hill. He fanned five, walked four and allowed one earned run. Freshman Brandon Koble tossed the final 3.1 innings with five Ks and three earned runs.
