SMCC Baseball Sweeps Non-Conference Doubleheader at Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team defeated Phoenix College 7-1 and 6-2 in a non-conference road doubleheader on Feb. 15. Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo tossed a three-hit complete game, and freshmen Karsen Waslefsky and Sam Christiansen each drove in a pair of runs in the game one victory. In the second game, sophomore Carter Richey finished with a home run and two doubles, Christiansen drove in another pair of runs, and freshman Austin Balmes recorded his first win of the year. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored a run in the second and three in the third and fifth to back up an outstanding performance from Urias-Calvillo. He did not allow a run until the bottom of the seventh and had five strikeouts and one walk to earn his first career victory. 

Waslefsky finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Christiansen scored a run to go with his pair of RBIs. Sophomore Brian Leon scored a pair of runs as a pinch runner as sophomore Kenneth Jimenez, the team's starting catcher, had a base hit and a walk. 

Sophomore Core Jackson drew a pair of walks, scored a run and stole a base, and freshman Dominic Chacon had a base hit and a run scored. Sophomore Jayden Smith added a pair of steals in the win. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC scored six runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings, and four Cougar pitchers combined to limit the Bears to two runs and six hits over seven innings. 

Balmes started the game for SMCC and tossed four innings with four Ks and two hits. Freshman Coleman Anderson tossed 1.1 innings of relief, sophomore Josaiah Estrella recorded a pair of outs, and freshman Aeneas Clark stuck out the side in the seventh to seal the win.

Richey went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs. The home run was Richey's team-leading third of the year, which is tied for third in the ACCAC as of Feb. 17. 

Christiansen finished 2-for-3 with a run, three RBIs, two stolen bases, and a walk to give him eight runs batted in this season. Freshman Jaden Miranda scored a pair of runs and stole two bases as a pinch runner because SMCC catcher sophomore Landen Argabright went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. 

Sophomores Michael Diaz and Connor Schneider scored runs, and Chacon added a double.
