SMCC Baseball Sweeps ACCAC Doubleheader from Cochise College

PHOENIX ---

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (18-6, 6-4 ACCAC) defeated Cochise College 9-1 (7 innings) and 10-7 in an ACCAC home doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 4. Sophomore Jaxon Jelkin fanned 10 Apaches over six innings, and the Cougars used a big sixth inning to post the 9-1 victory. In the second game, SMCC scored nine runs over the first three innings and held off a Cochise College rally in the ninth to sweep the doubleheader.

Game One Recap

Cochise pushed across a run in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1, but the Cougars responded immediately with solo home runs from Carter Richey and Jaden Miranda in their half of the frame to take a 3-1 lead. Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, SMCC scored five in the frame, including a three-run double from Kenneth Jimenez, to quell any thoughts of a comeback.

Jelkin improved to 4-1 on the season with a strong performance on the mound for SMCC. He scattered four hits, two walks, and one earned run over six innings. Freshman Brandon Koble threw the seventh inning for SMCC and fanned a pair.

The Cougars added a run in the second and three in the third to take a 9-3 lead and held a 10-4 advantage into the ninth. Matthew Martinez earned the win and improved to 2-1 on the season with five innings of relief work. He fanned seven and worked around four hits and a walk. Estrella picked up his first save of the year with three innings of relief work. He allowed three hits and struck out one. Nikolas Miller started the game for SMCC and had a strikeout.
