SMCC Baseball Splits Midweek ACCAC Series with Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (19-7, 7-5 ACCAC) split a midweek ACCAC series with Phoenix College, falling 4-1 at home on Mar. 7 before winning 13-7 at PC on Mar. 8. Freshman Sam Christiansen hit a leadoff home run in the Cougars' victory and finished 3-for-6 with two runs, three RBIs, a double and two stolen bases. 

Game One Recap

SMCC finished with six hits, but the Bears' Daniel Sotelo tossed 6.1 innings with six Ks and one unearned run to pick up his first win. Phoenix College scored a run in the third and fourth and added two insurance runs in the ninth to post the 4-1 victory. 

Kenneth Jimenez had a pair of singles for SMCC, and Connor Schneider posted a hit and a run. Carter RicheyKarsen Waslefsky and Landen Argabright added base hits for the Cougars. 

Brandon Koble (0-2) took the loss after five innings of work on the mound. He fanned three, walked one and allowed two earned runs. Alex Urias-Calvillo tossed the final four innings, allowing one earned run and two hits. 

Game Two Recap

Christiansen started the second game with a bang, hitting his second home of the season to start the game. Richey added a three-run blast in the frame, and SMCC led 6-0 before Phoenix College had an at-bat. SMCC added a run in the second and the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the eighth in the 13-7 victory. 

Richey went 2-for-5 with two runs, a stolen base and those three RBIs. Waslefsky was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a sac fly, and freshman Jaden Miranda had a triple, an RBI and scored two runs. 

Schneider finished 2-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, and Brian Leon had a pair of hits and an RBI. Michael Diaz scored three runs and stole a base, and Jimenez had two hits, two walks and an RBI. Dominic Chacon added the team's sixth stolen base and recorded a hit, a run and an RBI. 

Jacob Beltran earned the win for SMCC on the mound. He went five innings with nine strikeouts, two earned runs and zero walks. Nikolas Miller, Matthew Lighthall, Aeneas Clark and Coleman Anderson all tossed an inning of relief.
