SMCC Baseball Splits Series with Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (26-10, 12-8) split an ACCAC series with Glendale CC, falling 6-4 on the road on Mar. 24 before posting a 5-0 shutout victory on Mar. 25. Three pitchers (Jacob BeltranBrandon Koble, and Josaiah Estrella) combined to limit the Gauchos to three hits and five walks while Core Jackson had a pair of triples and Connor Schneider had three RBIs in the game two victory. 

Game One Recap 

GCC led 3-0 after two innings before SMCC rallied for two runs in the third and two in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. However, the Gauchos scored thrice in the eighth to post the 6-3 victory. 

Schneider led SMCC with two hits in the game, including a double, and scored a run. Sam Christiansen went 1-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a double, and Jaden Miranda added an RBI. Brian Leon scored a run as a pinch-runner, and Jackson added a stolen base. 

On the mound, Jaxon Jelkin started the game for SMCC and went 5.0 innings with six strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs. Alex Urias-Calvillo tossed two innings of relief and allowed one earned run, and Matthew Martinez took the loss with an inning of relief with three strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars got some outstanding pitching from the trio of Beltran, Koble and Estrella to shut out the Gauchos in the second game of the series.

Beltran earned the win with five innings of work to improve to 6-1 on the season. He fanned three and worked around three hits and four walks. Koble tossed three innings of hitless relief, fanning two and walking one. Estrella threw a quiet ninth inning to secure the victory.

Offensively, the Cougars scored a run in the second, three in the third and one in the eighth to post the win. Jackson's three hits led the team, he scored a run, and his two triples gave him three for the season. 

Schneider went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs to tie a season-high, and Karsen Waslefsky recorded his ninth double of the year and scored a run. Carter RicheyDominic Chacon and Jared Glinski scored a run, and Miranda added an RBi.
