Cougar Baseball Wins Pair from Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (30-10, 16-8 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert 8-1 on Mar. 31 and 3-2 on Apr. 1 in a pair of ACCAC contests. Sophomore Jaxon Jelkin tossed 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts, and freshman Sam Christiansen led the offense with three hits and three runs in the Mar. 31 victory. On April Fools Day, SMCC scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held off a CGCC rally in the ninth to post the 3-2 victory.

SMCC struck for a run in the third, but the Coyotes quickly tied the game with a run in the fourth. The 1-1 tie held until the sixth, when SMCC put together a six-run frame. The Cougars then added an insurance run in the eighth. 

Jelkin scattered two hits and two walks in 6.2 innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. He posted double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season. Freshman Alex Urias-Calvillo tossed 1.1 innings of relief, and freshman Aeneas Clark had a strikeout in throwing the ninth inning. 

Christiansen went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore Core Jackson went 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs, and two stolen bases, and freshman Dominic Chacon went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a triple. 

Freshman Karsen Waslefsky had a double and scored a run, and sophomore Connor Schneider had a single, and a run scored. Sophomore Carter Richey singled and scored a run, and sophomore Kenneth Jimenez had a single and an RBI.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning and remained tied until the eighth. Jimenez led SMCC with two hits, a double and a triple, and drove in a run.

Four other Cougars had base hits in the win: Christiansen, Jackson, Jared Glinski and Schneider. Jackson scored a run and stole a base, Richey had an RBi and Jaden Miranda scored a pair of runners as a courtesy runner for Jimenez. 

Sophomore Matthew Martinez earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief work. He fanned four and worked around four hits and a walk.

Sophomore Jacob Beltran started the game for SMCC and went 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts, four walks, one hit and one unearned run.
