SMCC Baseball Sweeps ACCAC Doubleheader against Arizona Western

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (26-19, 18-12 ACCAC) defeated Arizona Western twice in an ACCAC doubleheader at the SMCC Baseball Field on Tuesday, April 9. Sophomore Dominic Chacon finished 2 for 3 with a double and a home run, and the Cougars added three other extra-base hits, resulting in a seven-inning victory of 11-7. In game two, four Cougars had multiple hits, and three others had multiple RBIs, as SMCC won 11-5. 

Game One Recap

The team exchanged runs early and often before the Cougars pulled away with a five-run third. SMCC scored twice in the first, only to see AWC score three times in the second. The Cougars responded with two runs in their half of the second, but the Matadors posted three runs in the top of the third to take a 6-4 advantage. 

SMCC would lead 9-6 after the third and added runs in the fourth and fifth to seal the victory. 

Freshman Christopher Mata started the game with a triple and scored on a sac fly from freshman Joe Terranova. With two outs, Chacon blasted his team-leading sixth home run of the season. In the second, Mata and freshman Landon Springmeyer scored on Matador miscues. 

In the third, sophomore Niko Rosell hit a sacrifice fly, Springmeyer blasted a two-run double, and freshman Marcus Romero laced a two-run single to put SMCC ahead 9-6. 

Sophomore Karsen Waslefsky had an RBI single in the fourth, and sophomore Wylie Waters hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth. 

Chacon finished 2 for 3 with three runs, an RBI, a double, and a home run, while Springmeyer was 2 for 2 with three runs, two RBIs, a double, and a walk. Romero also had a pair of base hits, and Waters had the team's fourth double. 

Freshman Luis Martin Romero (3-5) earned the win on the mound with 3.2 innings of relief work. He fanned eight and worked around four hits, one earned run, and two walks. Sophomore Matthew Lighthall started the game for SMCC and went 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, one walk, and three earned runs. 

Game Two Recap

Trailing 3-1 after four and a half innings, the Cougars scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and added three in the seventh and two in the sixth to post the 11-7 victory and sweep the twinbill. 

With one out in the fifth, sophomore Jaden Miranda hit an RBI double that scored freshman Raul Parada. The Cougars then mounted a two-out rally as Waters had an RBi single, Waslefsky drew a bases-loaded walk, and Rosell laced a two-run single. 

In the seventh, Waslefsky hit an RBi double to score Terranova, and Romero connected on a two-run, two-out single to score Chacon and Waslefsky. 

Terranova scored on an RBI single, and Chacon added an RBI double in the eighth to conclude the Cougars' scoring for the day. 

Parada, Miranda, and Chacon had three hits in the victory. Parada scored once, Miranda scored twice with one RBI, and Chacon was 2 for 3 with three runs, an RBI, two walks, and a double. 

Terranova scored three times and posted two hits, one RBI, and a walk. Rosell led the team with three RBIs, and Waslefsky and Romero drove in a pair. 

Sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief work on the mound. He fanned three and worked around three hits, two earned runs, and two walks.

Sophomore Fabian Ibarra started the game for SMCC and went 4.0 innings with three K's, three hits, one run, and three walks. Sophomore Brandon Koble threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed one hit with five strikeouts.
