SMCC Baseball Knocks Off Pima CC to Clinch Postseason Berth

The South Mountain Community College baseball team (32-23, 22-16 ACCAC) split an ACCAC doubleheader with Pima CC on April 27. In game one, the Cougars fell 10-7 before rallying for a 7-5 victory in game two. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth in game two, the Cougars rallied for six runs in the frame and held on for the 7-5 victory to clinch a berth in the upcoming ACCAC Division I Region I playoffs. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars ended the regular season on a high note with a comeback victory. 

The six-run eighth started with walks from sophomores Wylie Waters and Dominic Chacon. A third sophomore, Karsen Waslefsky, singled to load the bases with no out and freshman Landon Springmeyer brought in Waters with a single to center. 

Freshman Brady Lord and sophomore Carlos Vega drew bases-loaded walks to bring in Chacon and Waslefsky and tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Jaden Miranda then laced a two-run single to score Springmeyer and Lord, and Vega scored on an RBI single from freshman Christopher Mata

The Aztecs hit a solo home run in the ninth, but sophomore Alex Urias-Calvillo sealed the win to earn his sixth save of the season. Sophomore Stephen Hernandez (4-2) earned the win with two innings of relief and two strikeouts. Sophomore Matthew Lighthall started the game for SMCC and went six innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts. 

Miranda went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double, while Waters was 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Springmeyer drew two walks and added a run and an RBI, and Vega was 1 for 2 with two runs, an RBI, and two walks. 

Game One Recap

The Aztecs scored four runs in the top of the seventh to post a 10-7 comeback win in game one of the twinbill. 

SMCC led 6-3 after four and 7-6 after six. After Pima CC scored twice in the first, the Cougars struck for three runs in their half of the frame. With two outs, Waslefsky reached on an error that allowed Waters to score, and freshman Marcus Romero laced a two-run double to center. 

In the second, Waters hit an RBI single to score Mata and freshman Joe Terranova, and Waslefsky posted an RBI single in the fourth to score Terranova. SMCC concluded its scoring in the fifth with an RBI single from Mata to score Springmeyer. 

Mata, Terranova, Waslefsky, and Romero had two hits for SMCC. Terranova scored twice and drew a walk, Mata and Waslefsky each had an RBI and a run scored, and Romero had the team's double. 

Sophomore Fabian Ibarra started the game for SMCC and went 4.1 innings with three hits, four runs, four walks, and four strikeouts. Freshman Luis Martin Romero went 1.2 innings with two hits, two runs, and two strikeouts, and freshman David Galindo (4-4) took the loss with three hits, four runs, two walks, and two strikeouts in an inning of relief.
