SMCC Men's Hoops Rallies for OT Win at Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (9-12, 3-8 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 76-70 in overtime Wednesday night in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road contest. Trailing by nine at halftime, the Cougars forced the extra frame with a solid second half (39-30) and then won the game in overtime.

SMCC shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field, knocked down four 3-pointers and connected on 12 free throws. The Cougars grabbed 39 rebounds, dished out 11 assists and recorded 12 steals.

Sophomore Demonte Demore led all players with 21 points, finishing with seven field goals and seven free throws. He tied for the team lead with nine rebounds and added three assists and three steals in 37 minutes of work.

Sophomore Jalen Smith also grabbed nine rebounds and added a season-high 13 points. He led the Cougars with four assists and added three steals in 31 minutes.

Fellow sophomore Elijah Melendez finished with 13 points, five rebounds, one assist and a steal in 32 minutes of work. Sophomore Isaiah Camon scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench, and another sophomore, Fahad Tarjali, came off the bench to score eight points and grab three rebounds.

Mesa CC held a 35-26 lead after 20 minutes, only to see SMCC win the second half 39-30. The Cougars then claimed the victory with an 11-5 period in overtime.
