SMCC Men's Hoops Falls at Chandler-Gilbert CC

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-14, 5-10 ACCAC) lost 70-58 at Chandler-Gilbert CC in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest on Feb. 7. Elijah Melendez led the Cougars with 16 points, and Shawn Black and Darien Allen added 11, but the Cougars could not stave off a Coyote comeback in the second half.

The Cougars led 23-19 at halftime but lost the second half 51-35. SMCC shot 38.2 percent from the field, knocked down 10 free throws and connected on six 3-pointers. The team grabbed 28 rebounds, dished out 12 assists and had six blocks.

Melendez finished 6-of-11 from the field and hit a pair of 3-pointers in 30 minutes. He added seven rebounds and two assists. Black was an efficient 3-for-3 from the field, knocked down his only 3-point attempt, and made all four free-throw attempts. He also had three rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes.

Allen went 5-of-13 from the field and led SMCC with nine rebounds. He added three assists, three blocks and two steals in 31 minutes. Demonte Demore had seven points, and four rebounds, and Jalen Gant added six points and three rebounds.
