Arizona Western Defeats SMCC Men's Hoops

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (11-16, 5-12 ACCAC) lost 87-55 at Arizona Western on Feb. 16 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference contest in Yuma, Ariz. Sophomore Isaiah Camon led the Cougars with 15 points. Sophomore Elijah Melendez added 12, but the Matadors jumped out to an early lead and held off any SMCC rally.

Arizona Western took a 47-24 lead into halftime and won the second half 40-31. SMCC shot 35.1 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers in the loss. The Cougars grabbed 25 rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Camon went 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. He added three rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes off the bench. Melendez finished 5-of-12 and had a steal. 

Freshman Darien Allen and sophomore Jalen Gant had a team-high five rebounds, and Gant added three points, an assist and a block. Sophomore Jalen Smith finished with five points, three rebounds and two steals.
