SMCC Men's Hoops Falls in Double Overtime at Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (3-1, 0-1 ACCAC) lost 94-89 in double overtime in an ACCAC contest in Prescott, Ariz., on Dec. 6. Sophomore Jaylen Wesley set new career highs with a team-leading 37 points and 18 rebounds and three other Cougars finished in double figures. Still, the Roughriders escaped with a five-point home win in SMCC's conference opener. 

The Cougars led 39-25 at halftime, but a furious second-half Roughrider rally sent to the game to an extra period tied at 71. SMCC knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired at the end of the first overtime period to force another extra frame tied at 81. However, Yavapai scored the first even points of second OT and pulled away for the victory. 

SMCC shot 38.2 percent (29 of 76) from the field and 37.9 percent (11 of 29) from 3-point range. The Cougars added 45 rebounds, 17 assists, seven steals and five blocks over the 50 minutes. 

Wesley was 13 of 22 from the field and made all three of his 3-pointers. Four of his 18 rebounds came on the offensive glass, and he added six assists, two steals, and two blocks in 46 minutes. 

Freshman Bobby Holcomb was second on the team with 17 points and made four 3-pointers. He added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal in 48 minutes. 

Sophomore Nyzhir Brown had 15 points and made four 3-pointers in 48 minutes. He added four boards, two assists and one steal. 

Freshman Parker Escalante made 9 of 15 free throws to finish with 13 points. He added four rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal in 46 minutes. 

Sophomore Colton Thomas, freshman Keyvone Craig, and freshman Deavon Felix had four rebounds off the bench. Thomas added three assists and Craig and Felix each had two points.
