SMCC Men's Basketball Falls to Phoenix College

The South Mountain Community College men's basketball team (6-12, 1-9 ACCAC) lost 89-58 to Phoenix College in an ACCAC road game on Saturday, Jan. 20. Sophomore Jaylen Wesley led SMCC with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Bobby Holcomb added 10 as the Cougars fell to the Bears. 

The Cougars trailed 41-21 at halftime and fell 48-37 in the second half. SMCC shot 34.9 percent (22 of 63) from the floor and added 31 rebounds, 11 assists, seven steals, and two blocks in defeat. 

Wesley was 7 of 17 and added two assists, two steals, and one block in 30 minutes. He has scored at least 20 points in every game he has appeared in, averaging 27.4 points and 10.9 rebounds in 17 contests. 

Holcomb returned to the court and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. He added two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 24 minutes. 

Freshman Parker Escalante totaled seven points, two rebounds, three assists, and one steal in 25 minutes. Sophomore Nyzhir Brown had five points, two rebounds, and a steal, and freshmen Nathan Robinson and Deven Johnson scored four points off the bench.
