SMCC Men's Hoops Falls to Pima CC

Sophomore Jaylen Wesley scored 25 points, and freshman Bobby Holcomb added 23, but the South Mountain Community College men's basketball team lost 97-81 to Pima Community College in an ACCAC home game on Wednesday, Feb. 7. Sophomore Nyzhir Brown posted 12 points for the Cougars and freshman Torian Gant added recorded seven off the bench for the Cougars. 

SMCC trailed 48-42 at halftime and fell 49-39 in the second half. The Cougars shot 44.4 percent (28 of 63) from the field and 85 percent (17 of 20) from the free-throw line. They added 19 rebounds, nine assists, 11 steals, and three blocks. 

Wesley went 9 of 23 from the field and 7 of 8 from the charity stripe. He also led SMCC with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 35 minutes. He was named the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week earlier in the day, averaging 26.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 22 contests. 

Holcomb finished 9 of 15 from the field and set a new season best with five 3-pointers. He added one rebound, one assist, and one steal in 38 minutes and is averaging 15.8 points per game while shooting 43.5 percent from 3-point range. 

Brown posted 12 points and knocked down two 3-pointers in 34 minutes, and Gant recorded seven points, two rebounds, two steals, and a block in 15 reserve minutes. 

Freshman Deven Johnson added four points and three assists in 18 minutes, and freshman Jayven Driscoll recorded four rebounds and two points.
