Dillon Dean, SMCC Men's Golf Claim Mountain Lion Spring Invitational Titles

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team kicked off its spring break by winning the Mountain Lion Spring Invitational hosted by Estrella Mountain CC at Sundance Golf Course in Buckeye, Ariz., on Mar. 8-9. The Cougars finished at 8-over, 584 to defeat second-place Eastern Arizona by 22 strokes. Individually, freshman Dillon Dean claimed individual medalist honors at 3-under 141 and was the only competitor to finish under par at the event. 

At the par-72 course, SMCC opened with an 8-over, 296 to lead by six strokes over the Gila Monsters and seven strokes over Pima CC. In their second round, the Cougars improved by eight strokes to finish at even-par, 288, the best team score at the event and 16 strokes better than Eastern Arizona. 

Dean found himself one stroke off the pace after 18 holes at 1-under 71 after posting five birdies. In his second round, he posted another five birdies and went 2-under over the final nine holes to claim the tournament title. 

Freshman Dylan Kohner finished second on the leaderboard at 1-over, 145 with scores over 74 and 71. He had four birdies in his first round and recorded six over his second round. 

Sophomore Brady Clark tied for fourth at 3-over, 147, with scores of 70 and 77. He led the event after the first day at 2-under 70, posting three birdies and an eagle on the par-five No. 10. He had one birdie in his second round. 

Freshman Eric Klutke moved up 15 spots on the leaderboard after posting a 1-over 72 in his second round to tie for 13th overall. He opened with an 9-over 81. 

Sophomore Cole Finch jumped 14 spots to tie for 16th overall at 12-over, 156 after a 2-over, 74 in his second round. He opened with a 10-over, 82. 

Sophomore Luke Greig placed 30th at 20-over, 164 and moved up three spots after a second-round score of 79. He opened with an 85.
