SMCC Men's Golf Wins Gila Monsters Spring Invitational; Dylan Kohner Claims Co-Medalist

The South Mountain Community College men's golf team rallied to win at 2-under 574 the Gila Monsters Spring Invitational at the Mt. Graham Golf Club on April 8-9 in Safford, Ariz. SMCC trailed Eastern Arizona by six strokes after the first day, but the Cougars rallied to finish at even-par over their final 18 holes to edge the host Gila Monsters by two strokes. Individually, freshman Dylan Kohner earned Co-Individual Medalist honors with a score of 3-under 141. 

The Cougars opened at 2-under 286 and then finished at even-par 288. SMCC was the only team to finish even-par or better in the second round. 

One of the standout performances came from freshman Dylan Kohner. He moved up six spots on the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 in the second round, tying with Estrella Mountain CC's Nick Erickson for the tournament title at 3-under 141. Kohner's impressive play included closing with five birdies in his second round, including four on the back nine and opening at even-par 72 with three birdies. 

Sophomore Brady Clark also posted a solid second round to move up six spots in the final standings to finish fifth at even-par 144. He recorded a 1-under 71 in the second round that saw him post four birdies, including three on the back nine. He had three birdies in his opening-round 73. 

Freshman Dillon Dean tied for sixth at 1-over 145 with scores of 2-under 70 and 3-over 75. Dean had three birdies in his first round, including an eagle on the par-five No. 14, and two birdies in his second. 

Sophomore Cole Finch tied for 10th at 4-over 148. He fired a 1-under 71 in his first round and posted a 5-over 77 in his second. He had an eagle on No. 9 and a birdie in his first round, and two birdies over his final three holes in the second. 

Freshman Eric Klutke was 13th at 5-over 149 with scores of 4-over 76 and 1-over 73. He had four birdies in his first round and added one birdie and one eagle in his second. 

Sophomore Luke Greig tied for 30th at 14-over 158 with scores of 6-over 78 and 8-over 80. He had a birdie in his second round.
