Cougars Sweep Home Opener against Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (9-3, 2-0 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 9-1 (5) and 20-5 (5) in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader on Feb. 8. In the first game, Jaudrey Ah Quin homered twice and drove in five runners, and Rylie Atherton tossed a complete game to defeat the Thunderbirds. The SMCC offense produced 16 hits in the second contest, including nine for extra bases, to sweep the conference-opening doubleheader. 

Game One Recap

Ah Quin hit the first pitch of her first two at-bats over the wall for her third and fourth home runs of the year to power SMCC to a 9-1, five-inning victory. She finished 2-for-2 with five RBIs and two runs scored. 

Annalise Chavez also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI. Her solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, her fourth deep fly of the season, ended the game. 

Kayliana Sablan went 1-for-2 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Kate Hogan also scored two runs and added an RBI and a double. Taylor Mount had a two-run single in the second and scored a run. 

Rylie Atherton (3-2) picked up the win in the circle with five innings of one-run softball. She allowed one hit and struck out four. 

Game Two Recap

The SMCC offense continued to roll in game two, compiling seven doubles, a triple and a home run in a 20-5, five-inning victory. 

Three Cougars finished with three hits in the win. The ACCAC Player of the Week, Tara Lorona, went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs, and five RBIs. Lauren Russell was 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs and two doubles, while Sablan was 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a double. 

Hogan and Ah Quin had two hits in the win. Hogan scored four runs to go with a double and an RBI, and Ah Quin hit a double and finished with two runs and three RBIs. Mount scored a pair of runs, and Carolina Olivas picked up two RBIs.

Christian Smith (3-0) picked up the win in the circle with five innings of work. She fanned three and walked one to improve to 3-0 on the season.
