SMCC Softball Splits Doubleheader at Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (10-6, 3-3 ACCAC) split an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Glendale Community College on Feb. 19. In the first contest, the Cougars and Gauchos traded leads, with GCC pulling off a 14-13 win. In the second game, SMCC retaliated with a barrage of offense that amassed 15 runs and 16 hits in a 15-0, five-inning victory.

Game One Recap

The Cougars trailed 8-0 after the second inning and 9-7 after the third against the Gauchos. SMCC scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take an 11-9 lead. However, GCC scored five runs in their half of the sixth and held off a seventh-inning Cougar rally to earn the 14-13 win.

Kayliana Sablan finished 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a sac fly and a stolen base. Mariah MartinezAnnalise Chavez and Carolina Olivas had two hits in the loss. Martinez went 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs, a stolen base and a home run, while Olivas had a pair of doubles, one run and one RBI. Chavez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a triple.

Kate Hogan had the team's second triple, and Tara Lorona added a double. Monica Chon produced a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt.

In the circle, Martinez (3-2) took the loss for SMCC. She allowed two earned runs, four walks and five hits in 4.2 innings of work. Rylie Atherton started the game and went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and eight earned runs.

Game Two Recap

In the second game, the Cougars unloaded on the Gauchos, posting a 15-0 victory to snap a three-game losing streak. SMCC scored four runs in the second, two in the third, five in the fourth, and four in the fifth.

Christian Smith (4-0) worked around 12 hits and one walk to win in the circle. She had a strikeout and a walk in 5.0 innings.

Hogan led the team with a three-hit performance and went 3-for-5 with a run scored, a stolen base, two RBIs and a double. Sablan, Martinez, Olivas and Taylor Mount all had two hits in the win.

Martinex scored two runs, drove in three and hit her second home run of the day. Olivas hit the Cougars' second home run and added three runs, a stolen base and three RBIs. Sablan had an RBI and stole two bases, and Mount scored three runs, had two RBIs and stole two bases.

Natalie Torres hit the team's second double, and Chon, Lorona and Chavez had RBIs.
