SMCC Softball Battles with Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College softball team (10-8, 3-5 ACCAC) lost 15-7 (5 innings) and 8-1 to Central Arizona in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference home doubleheader Feb. 22. In the first game, the Cougars hit three home runs, but the Vaqueras scored multiple runs in four frames to win. SMCC produced four hits in the second game, but Central Arizona scored six runs in the seventh to break open a 2-1 game.

Game One Recap

Kayliana SablanJaudrey Ah Quin and Mariah Martinez hit home runs for SMCC in a 15-7 loss.

From her leadoff spot, Sablan finished 3-for-4 with a run, four RBIs and a stolen base. Ah Quin finished 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Martinez was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

Carolina Olivas had a base hit and scored a run, and Taylor Mount had a sacrifice bunt.

Christian Smith (4-1) took the loss in the circle for SMCC. 

Game Two Recap

Sablan, Martinez, Monica Chon and Kate Hogan had base hits for the Cougars, but Central Arizona scored six runs in the seventh to win 8-1.

Chon recorded a double, Hogan had the RBI and Sablan scored the SMCC run. Tara Lorona and Olivas added sacrifice bunts. 

Rylie Atherton (3-4) took the loss for the Cougars, striking out 10 in seven innings. She allowed seven earned runs and walked 10.
