Cougar Softball Squares off With Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (10-10, 3-7 ACCAC) lost an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader to Yavapai College on Feb. 26, falling 14-1 (5 innings) and 14-0 (5 innings). In the first game, sophomore Tara Lorona blasted a solo home run in the second inning, but the Roughriders scored a run in each inning to post the win. In the second game, freshman Carolina Olivas had two hits but Yavapai scored 14 runs over the first four innings to sweep the twinbill. 

Game One Recap

Yavapai scored nine runs in the first innings and added runs in every subsequent frame to win 14-1 in five innings. 

Lorona finished 2-for-2 with the solo home run, while freshman Monica Chon and sophomore Taylor Mount added base hits. 

Rylie Atherton (3-5) took the loss in the circle for SMCC. She allowed 10 earned runs with two strikeouts in an inning of work. Sophomore Christian Smith threw the final four innings and allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts. 

Game Two Recap

Olivas finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, but the Roughriders scored multiple runs in the second, third and fourth to earn the win.

Freshman Mariah Martinez and Chon added base hits, and Mount recorded a stolen base. 

Smith (4-2) took the loss in the circle. She threw 4.0 innings and allowed 12 hits and 10 earned runs. Atherton tossed the fifth and had a pair of strikeouts.
