Offense Powers SMCC Softball to Sweep of McCook CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (20-12) swept a non-conference doubleheader against McCook CC (NE) on Mar. 16, winning game one 12-4 and taking the second game 18-4. In the first victory, the Cougars hit three home runs and scored multiple runs in three frames. SMCC blasted five doubles and two home runs in the second game and finished with 20 hits to sweep the twinbill.

Game One Recap

The Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings, plated six more in the fourth and held off an Indian rally in the fifth to post a 12-4, five-inning victory. 

Carolina Olivas and Kayliana Sablan led SMCC with three hits, and Mariah Martinez and Lauren Russell added two hits apiece. 

Olivas scored a pair of runs, hit a double and blasted her second home run of the season, and Sablan scored three runs, drove in three and added a stolen base. Russell hit her fourth home run of the season and had four RBIs, while Martinez scored a pair of runs, stole a base and had a double. 

Annalise Chavez hit her ninth home run to tie for the team lead with Martinez, and Tara Lorona had three RBIs. 

Martinez (6-3) picked up the win with five innings in the circle. She had three strikeouts and allowed three hits and two earned runs. 

Game Two Recap

Six Cougars had multiple hits, and the team led 16-0 through three innings to sweep the doubleheader. SMCC scored five runs in the first, five in the second, six in the third and two in the fourth.

Kate Hogan led the Cougars with four hits, and Taylor Mount and Lorona added three. Hogan scored a pair of runs, drove in two and hit her team-leading 10th double. Mount scored three runs and hit a solo home run, her first of the season. 

Lorona hit a pair of doubles, giving her nine for the year, scored three runs and had three RBIs. Olivas scored a pair of runs, hit a double and stole a base, and Jazzlyn Joaquin had the team's fifth double. 

Christian Smith had the team's second home run, blasting a pinch-hit, three-run shot. Chavez had a pair of hits and three RBIs, and Sablan scored twice with two RBIs. Martinez added with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. 

Rylie Atherton (5-5) earned the win in the circle for SMCC, tossing five innings with 11 strikeouts.
