SMCC Softball Extends Winning Streak with Sweep at Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (24-12, 15-9 ACCAC) swept an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mesa CC on Mar. 26. The Cougars posted a 16-12 victory in the first game and an 18-14 decision in the second game to extend their winning streak to eight games. SMCC totaled 36 hits in the two games, including 15 for extra bases. 

Game One Recap

After falling behind 3-1, the Cougars scored seven runs in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead. They added three runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to hold off a Thunderbird rally en route to the 16-12 victory.

Kate Hogan and Mariah Martinez led the Cougars with three hits. Martinez hit her team-leading 11th home run and finished with three runs and five RBIs. Hogan hit a double to go with three runs and an RBI. 

Carolina OlivasTaylor Mount and Tara Lorona finished with two hits in the win. Mount doubled, scored three times and had three RBIs, while Olivas scored three times to go with two RBIs, a stolen base and a double. Lorona drove in a pair and had a double, and Jaudrey Ah Quin scored a pair of runs and stole a base. 

Christian Smith (11-3) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work in the circle. She fanned two and allowed three earned runs to post her 11th win of the season. Martinez tossed the final 2.2 innings for SMCC. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars and Thunderbirds exchanged multi-run innings throughout the contest, but SMCC prevailed 18-14 after its 10-0 lead shrunk to 14-13 after five innings.

Olivas led SMCC with a season-high four hits. She scored three runs, drove in three, hit a pair of doubles and blasted her third home run in the win. 

Monica Chon, Mount and Lorona finished with three hits apiece. Lorona doubled for the second-straight game, scored three times, stole a base and drove in a pair, while Mount had an RBI, a stolen base and a run. Chon recorded her third double of the year with three RBIs and a run. 

Kayliana SablanLauren Russell and Hogan added two hits. Sablan scored twice and stole a base, and Russell produced a double, a home run, two runs, a stolen base and three RBIs. Hogan hit her team-leading sixth triple of the year and added two runs and three RBIs.

Rylie Atherton (6-5) recorded the win with 3.1 innings. She had six strikeouts and allowed six earned runs. Smith and Martinez saw time in relief for the Cougars, with Martinez tossing 3.0 innings with one earned run.
