Yavapai College Takes Two from Cougar Softball

The South Mountain Community College softball (25-19, 16-16 ACCAC) lost 14-3 (5) and 16-4 (5) to Yavapai College in a road Arizona Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader on April 12. Tara Lorona hit seventh home run of the season in the game one loss, while Monica Chon added a solo blast, her second of the season, in the second game.

Game One Recap

SMCC scored a run in the first, but fell behind 10-2 after three innings. The Roughriders added fur runs and claimed a 14-3, five-inning victory. 

Lorona finished 1-for-2 and picked up her 38th RBI of the season on the solo home run, and Kate Hogan had an RBI and a stolen base. 

Taylor Mount led SMCC with a pair of base hits and recorded her eighth double of the season, and Carolina Olivas scored a pair of runs and had a hit.

Christian Smith (12-6) took the loss in the circle for SMCC. She tossed three innings with two K's and four earned runs. Rylie Atherton threw the fourth and had a strikeout. 

Game Two Recap

Yavapai College led 4-0 after two innings, but SMCC rallied for three runs in the third. However, the Roughriders responded with 10 runs in the third and two in the fourth to post a 16-4, five-inning win.

Chon hit a solo home run and Mariah Martinez led SMCC with a pair of base hits. Mount recorded her 24th and 25th RBIs of the year and Olivas scored a run and had an RBI. 

Martinez (7-6) took the loss in the circle after tossing 2.2 innings with 10 earned runs. Smith and Atherton saw time in relief.
