Cougars Sweep Scottsdale CC to Wrap up Regular Season

The South Mountain Community College softball team (34-22, 25-19 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 7-1 and 12-7 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference road doubleheader on May 7 in the regular-season finale for both squads. Freshman Kate Hogan led SMCC with three extra-base hits and three RBIs in the game one victory. Fellow freshman Mariah Martinez and sophomore Tara Lorona hit home runs in game two as the Cougars clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Division II Regional Tournament. 

Game One Recap

SMCC broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth and added six runs over the fifth and sixth to post a 7-1 victory against the Artichokes. 

Sophomore Rylie Atherton (10-7) threw a complete game to earn her 10th win of the year. She scattered three hits with one unearned run and six strikeouts. 

Hogan finished 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and her 14th home run. Freshman Carolina Olivas also had multiple hits with an RBI and a stolen base. 

Sophomore Lauren Russell blasted her 10th home run of the season, a solo home run, and Martinez and sophomore Jaudrey Ah Quin added doubles. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars totaled six extra-base hits as the Cougars rolled to a 12-7 victory. Kayliana Sablan led SMCC with three base hits, including a double, two runs and a stolen base. 

Martinez hit her 18th home run of the season, a solo shot, and Lorona finished 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and her ninth home run. 

Hogan and Olivas also had two hits in the victory. Hogan went 2-for-5 with a run, a stolen base, two RBIs and her team-leading 23rd double, while Olivas was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, a stolen base, two RBIs and two walks. 

Freshman Lucero Vasquez Sanchez added a double, freshman Maria Carias picked up a sac fly, and sophomore Taylor Mount recorded a sac bunt. 

Sophomore Christian Smith (17-8) tossed a complete game to record her 17th win of the year. She had a pair of strikeouts and allowed five earned runs in seven innings of work.
