SMCC Softball Announces Four-Year Transfers

The South Mountain Community College softball program announced its four-year transfers after a historic 2023 season that saw the Cougars win the ACCAC and the Region I Division II Championship and participate in the 2023 NJCAA Division II World Series.

Sophomore centerfielder Makaiya Gomez and freshman shortstop Brianna Garcia earned NJCAA Division II First Team All-American honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organization announced on June 2. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds received Second Team All-American honors for her combined work in the circle and at the plate as the three Cougars were recognized for their role in a historic campaign for SMCC softball.

Sophomores Makaiya Gomez and Anisa Reynolds and freshman Brianna Garcia received NJCAA Division II First Team All-South Region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The trio is now eligible for NFCA All-American honors, which will be announced in the coming week.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (54-10) lost 6-2 to Des Moines Area Community College (IA) in an elimination game in the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park. The Bears struck for six runs over the first two innings to fend off the Cougars, who saw their season come to an end with the loss.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (54-9) lost 8-6 to Jones College (MS) and then posted an 8-0 (6 innings) victory over Lansing CC (MI) on day two of the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park. Sarah Potter, Iliana Munoz, and Halle Hogan hit solo home runs in the loss to Jones College. In the nightcap against Lansing CC, Munoz went deep twice, Brianna Garcia added a two-run shot, and Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete-game shutout as the Cougars advanced to play on Thursday.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (53-8) defeated Jackson College (MI) 3-1 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, S.C. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete game in the circle and freshmen Iliana Munoz and Mia Franco had two hits apiece as the Cougars overcame an early 1-0 deficit to down the Jets. SMCC will now face Jones College (MS) at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT in the second round of the double-elimination tournament. The game will be broadcast on the NJCAA Network.

The South Mountain Community College softball team is the X seed in the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, S.C. from May 23-27. The Cougars won the Region I Division II Tournament and will now set their sights on a national title as the country's best teams meet up in the Palmetto State.

The South Mountain Community College softball team (52-8) won all three of its games at the Region I Division II Tournament to claim the Region Championship and advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series May 23-27 at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, SC. The Cougars posted a 13-10 victory over Chandler-Gilbert CC on May 11, a 10-7 comeback win over Phoenix College on May 12, and a 4-3 victory over Phoenix College again to punch their ticket to the World Series.

For the first time in school history, the South Mountain Community College softball team has won the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Championship. The Cougars finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak and posted a 49-8 overall mark and a 43-5 record in ACCAC play.

Five members of the South Mountain Community College softball team received All-ACCAC and All-Region I Division II honors as voted upon by the league's head coaches. Sophomore Makaiya Gomez was named ACCAC Player of the Year with sophomore Anisa Reynolds and freshmen Halle Hogan and Brianna Garcia joining her with First Team All-ACCAC honors. Sophomore Rebecca Miller received Second Team All-ACCAC honors and joined her four teammates on the Region I Division II squad, and Cougar head coach Brittany Matta was named ACCAC Coach of the Year.

The No. 3 South Mountain Community College softball team (49-8, 43-5 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 8-0 (6 innings) and 9-6 in an ACCAC home doubleheader on May 6. Sophomore Annalise Chavez blasted a home run in both contests, and sophomore Anisa Reynolds and freshman Halle Hogan also went deep as the Cougars swept the Artichokes on Sophomore Day.

May 01, 2023

The No. 4 South Mountain Community College softball team (45-8, 41-5 ACCAC) defeated Pima CC 12-1 (5 innings) and 8-5 in an ACCAC road doubleheader in Tucson on April 27. Freshman Iliana Munoz went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs and six RBIs in the game-one victory. In game two, freshman Brianna Garcia hit her league-leading 28th home run and added two doubles and five RBIs as the Cougars claimed the ACCAC title for the first time in program history.

No. 4 SMCC Softball Outlasts Eastern Arizona to Even Season Series

The No. 4 South Mountain Community College softball team (45-8, 39-5 ACCAC) defeated Eastern Arizona 3-2 and 17-14 in an ACCAC road doubleheader on April 25 in Thatcher, Ariz. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds blasted her 24th home run and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win in game one. In the second game, the Cougars got home runs from freshmen Halle Hogan and Sarah Potter, and Reynolds wiggled out of another bases-loaded jam in the seventh to record the save.

The No. 3 South Mountain Community College softball team (43-8, 37-5 ACCAC) split a home ACCAC doubleheader with Arizona Western on April 22, winning game one 5-1 before falling 21-5 (5 innings) in game two. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete game in the circle, and sophomore Makaiya Gomez went 4-for-4 with a double to lead the Cougars to a game-one victory. The second game saw the Matadors snap SMCC's winning streak with multiple runs in every frame of the five-inning victory.

The No. 3 South Mountain Community College softball team (42-7, 36-4 ACCAC) defeated Chandler-Gilbert CC 11-3 (6 innings) and 10-0 (5) in an ACCAC road doubleheader on April. 18. Sophomore Makaiya Gomez and freshman Brianna Garcia homered in each victory, and freshman Angelica Tello and sophomore Anisa Reynolds combined to limit the Coyotes to one earned run over 11 innings in the circle.
