SMCC Softball Powers Past Glendale CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (8-3, 7-1 ACCAC) defeated Glendale CC 14-2 (5 innings) and 18-2 (5) in an ACCAC home doubleheader on Feb. 18. The Cougars totaled 33 hits over eight innings of work to extend their winning streak to six-straight conference games. 

Game One Recap

SMCC struck for five runs in the first, two in the second and seven in the third en route to the 14-2 victory over the Gauchos. 

Sophomore Makaiya Gomez and freshman Brianna Garcia led SMCC with three hits apiece in the win. Gomez finished 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, a double, a home run and a walk, while Garcia was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. 

Sophomore Rebecca Miller and freshmen Vanessa Philpot and Iliana Munoz each had two hits in the win. Miller finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, Philpot drove in three, and Munoz added a run scored and a double. 

Freshman Angelica Tello earned her third win of the season with a complete game performance. She fanned two and allowed two unearned in her five innings of work. 

Game Two Recap

Sophomore Anisa Reynolds homered in her first three at-bats as the Cougars rolled to an 18-2, five-inning victory. A sophomore from Chandler, Ariz., Reynolds finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs, five RBIs and a walk. In a week in which SMCC swept Phoenix Colege and Glendale CC, Reynolds finished 10-for-14 with seven home runs, 13 RBIs, 10 runs, a double and two walks. 

Reynolds also picked up the win in the circle for SMCC. She tossed five innings with four hits, two earned runs and a strikeout to pick up her second win of the year. 

Garcia also finished with three hits in the win, going 3-for-3 with four runs, six RBIs, two home runs, a stolen base, and a walk. She is batting .488 with six home runs and a team-best 25 RBIs in 11 games this season. 

Freshman Sarah Potter, Miller, Gomez and Munoz all had two hits in the win. Potter hit the team's sixth home run of the game and went 2-for-3 with a run, three RBIs and a walk. Miller scored a run, Munoz added a double and scored twice, and Gomez scored three times and added an RBI. Freshman Halle Hogan scored two runs with an RBI and a stolen base.
