SMCC Softball Sweeps ACCAC Doubleheader at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College softball team (10-3, 9-1 ACCAC) defeated Central Arizona 18-10 and 12-8 (six innings) in an ACCAC road doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 23. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds finished with two home runs and six RBIs, while sophomores Makaiya Gomez and Rebecca Miller also homered in the game one victory. In game two, Reynolds and Miller went deep again, with freshman Brianna Garcia hitting the third Cougar home run in the victory. 

Game One Recap

SMCC pounded 16 hits, including four home runs and three doubles, in its 18-10 victory over the Vaqueras. SMCC led 7-0 after two innings and held a 13-1 advantage into the fifth. Central Arizona responded with seven runs in the frame to extend the game, and the Cougars posted two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to snuff out any hopes of a CAC comeback. 

Reynolds finished 3-for-5 with three runs, seven RBIs, and home runs 10 and 11 on the season. Gomez went 3-for-3 with four runs, a home run, a double and six RBIs, while Miller was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. 

Garcia also produced three hits in the win and finished 3-for-5 with three runs, an RBI and two doubles. Freshman Iliana Munoz scored three runs, and four other Cougars also touched home plate. Freshman Miranda Martinez added a two-run single in the win. 

Freshman Angelica Tello (4-0) earned the win with 4.2 innings of work, fanning two and allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Freshman Mykenzie Flores tossed 2.1 innings of relief with seven hits and five earned runs. 

Game Two Recap

The SMCC offense continued to roll in the 12-8, six-inning victory in the second half of the twinbill. Both teams scored four runs in the first, and SMCC put up another four in the second to take an 8-4 lead. The Cougars added a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to stay ahead of Central Arizona and sweep the doubleheader.

Reynolds hit her 12th home run of the year and finished 1-for-4 with two runs, and Miller was 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and her third home run of the season. Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and her seventh home run of the year. 

Gomez went 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and a double, and Martinez was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Freshman Halle Hogan had two singles, a run and an RBI, and sophomore Jessica Gordon added a single, a run and two RBIs. 

Reynolds (3-2) picked up the win with 5.1 innings of work in the circle. She allowed 11 hits and eight earned runs to go with seven strikeouts. Tello recorded her first save of the year by getting the final two outs after entering the contest with the tying run on deck.
