SMCC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Yavapai College

The South Mountain Community College softball team (12-3, 11-1 ACCAC) defeated Yavapai College 9-1 (6 innings) and 28-3 (5 innings) in an ACCAC home doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25. Freshman Angelica Tello flirted with a no-hitter in game one and finished with 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort as SMCC scored eight runs in the sixth to post the run-rule victory. In the second game, the Cougars hit three grand slams and six home runs to sweep the doubleheader. 

The two wins over Yavapai snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Roughriders and were SMCC's first wins in the series since 2016. The victories were also just the second and third home wins for SMCC in the series since 2013. 

Game One Recap

Tied 1-1 in the sixth, SMCC exploded for eight runs in the sixth to post the 9-1 victory. Tello was sharp all game, facing two batters over the minimum in six innings. She fanned a season-high 10 batters to improve to 5-0. 

Freshman Sarah Potter had a key two-run double in the sixth with the bases loaded to break the 1-1 tie, and freshman Jessica Gordon had a double and a walk in the nine-run sixth inning. 

Freshman Brianna Garcia led SMCC with three hits and finished with a double, a run and an RBI. Sophomore Makaiya Gomez hit a home run and finished 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk.

Freshman Mia Franco scored a pair of runs and added an RBi, and sophomore Rebecca Miller and freshman Miranda Martinez scored a run. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars scored a run in the first and then exploded for 27 runs over the next three innings, including 14 in the third, to post the 28-3 win. 

Garcia hit one of the Cougars' three grand slams and finished 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBIs, two doubles, and a walk. Gordon finished 4-for-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam, four runs, five RBIs, and a double. 

Freshman Iliana Munoz had the team's third grand slam and went 3-for-4 with three runs and six RBIs. Freshman Halle Hogan recorded a double and a home run, scoring four runs with two RBIs. 

Freshman Mekaila Smith had the team's sixth home run, a pinch-hit two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth. Gomez was 1-for-2 with four runs, two RBIs, and three walks, and Franco went 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Freshman Mykenzie Flores scored four runs, Miller drove in a pair, and sophomore Annalise Chavez had a pinch-hit RBI single. 

Freshman Adenira Marquez earned the win with 5.0 innings of work. She allowed five hits and three earned runs to improve to 2-1 for the year.
