No. 9 SMCC Softball Sweeps Scottsdale CC

The No. 9 South Mountain Community College softball team (26-7, 20-4 ACCAC) defeated Scottsdale CC 14-0 (5) and 11-4 in an ACCAC road doubleheader on Mar. 23. Freshman Angelica Tello tossed a two-hit shutout and Makaiya Gomez, Brianna Garcia and Halle Hogan hit home runs in the game one victory. In game two, Gomez hit two home runs, Garcia and Hogan went deep again, and Anisa Reynolds blasted the team's fifth as the Cougars rolled to the doubleheader sweep. 

Game One Recap

Tello tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 9-1 on the season. She fanned three and did not walk anyone. SMCC scored in all five innings, including six runs in the fifth. 

Gomez went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, a double, a home run, and a stolen base. Garcia hit her 19th home run of the year, a three-run shot, and Hogan blasted her sixth of the season. 

Freshmen Mia Franco and Iliana Munoz each had two hits in the win. Franco scored twice and had two RBIs, and Munoz scored three runs. Freshman Vanessa Philpot roped a double, scored a run and had two RBIs, and sophomore Rebecca Miller had two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI. 

Game Two Recap

Gomez hit a pair of home runs to give her 15 for the season as the Cougars broke open a 6-4 game with runs in the third, fourth and sixth. 

Gomez finished 2-for-3 with three runs, five RBIs, two home runs and two walks. Garcia hit her team-leading 20th home run and finished 3-for-5 with two runs, a stolen base and two RBIs, and Hogan added her second two-run blast of the day. Reynolds added a two-run shot, her 16th of the year. 

Sarah Potter, Miranda Martinez, Jessica Gordon and Munoz had a single and a run scored. Adenira Marquez had a base hit and a stolen base. 

Reynolds picked up the win in the circle with a complete-game performance to improve to 9-3. She worked around a four-run second and posted four strikeouts with a walk.
