No. 8 SMCC Softball Sweeps Mesa CC

The South Mountain Community College softball team (28-7, 22-4 ACCAC) defeated Mesa CC 11-3 (5 innings) and 6-3 in an ACCAC home doubleheader on Mar. 25. Vanessa Philpot hit two home runs, and Anisa ReynoldsIliana Munoz and Mia Franco had two hits apiece as the Cougars posted the run-rule victory in game one. In the second game, Franco roped an RBI double, and Reynolds blasted a two-run home run to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth and lift the Cougars to the doubleheader sweep. 

Game One Recap

SMCC struck for multiple runs in the first four innings and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the fifth to post the 11-3, five-inning victory. 

Philpot finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, blasting a solo and two-run shot to give her five home runs on the season. Reynolds recorded a double and went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Franco was 2-for-2 with a run, a sac fly and three RBIs. 

Munoz went 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases, and Makaiya Gomez also had two steals to go with two runs, two walks and an RBI. 

Angelica Tello tossed a complete game in the circle to improve to 10-1 on the season. She fanned three and allowed two earned runs in five innings of work. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars overcame an early 3-0 deficit and blasted four home runs to win 6-3. Trailing 3-0 after the top of the first, Gomez hit a leadoff home run in the SMCC half of the frame, and Sarah Potter and Munoz hit solo home runs in the second to tie the game. 

With Brianna Garcia on first with one out in the fifth, Franco smashed a double off the wall in center field to score Garcia and break the tie. Reynolds then blasted a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field to lift SMCC to victory. She now has 17 home runs and 52 RBIs on the season. 

Garcia led SMCC with two hits, producing her team-leading 15th double and a stolen base. 

Reynolds improved to 10-3 on the season with a complete-game performance. She struck out three and worked around two walks and three earned runs.
