No. 6 SMCC Softball Extends Winning Streak with GCC Sweep

The No. 6 South Mountain Community College softball team (34-7, 28-4) defeated Glendale CC 16-0 (5 innings) and 10-0 (5 innings) in an ACCAC road doubleheader on April 4. Sophomore Annalise Chavez blasted a double and a home run, sophomore Anisa Reynolds hit her 20th home run of the season, and freshman Iliana Munoz had a team-high four hits in the game one victory. In the second game, freshman Halle Hogan went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs and freshman Mykenzie Flores tossed a four-hit shutout. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored three runs in the first, five in the second, seven in the third and one in the fifth to post the 16-0, five-inning victory.  

Chavez, the team's catcher, went 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Reynolds finished 1-for-3 with two runs, a walk and a three-run home run, while Munoz was 4-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a double. 

Sophomore Makaiya Gomez walked three times, scored three runs and had a single, and freshman Mia Franco was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Hogan went 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBIs, a double and a walk. 

Freshman Vanessa Philpot scored a pair of runs and had a sac fly, freshman Brianna Garcia posted a run and an RBI, and sophomore Jessica Gordon had two RBIs. 

In the circle, freshman Angelica Tello improved to 11-1 overall with a five-inning shutout. She scattered four hits and struck out one. 

Game Two Recap

SMCC led 1-0 after two complete innings and then exploded for three runs in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth en route to the 10-0, five-inning victory. 

Hogan continued to swing a hot bat, hitting her ninth home run of the season with the five RBIs raising her season total to 39. Gomez roped her 15th double of the year and went 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, a stolen base and a walk. 

Munoz was hit by a pitch three times and scored a run, Garcia drove in a pair of runs and had a sac fly, and Chavez scored a run. 

Flores improved to 8-2 on the year with a five-inning shutout victory in the circle. She worked around four hits and a walk and posted two strikeouts.
