No. 5 Cougar Softball Sweeps Yavapai College

The No. 5 South Mountain Community College softball team (38-7, 32-4 ACCAC) defeated Yavapai College 12-2 (5 innings) and 16-12 in an ACCAC road doubleheader in Prescott, Ariz., on April 11. The Cougars blasted seven doubles in the game one victory as freshman Vanessa Philpot roped two and fellow rookies Mia Franco and Halle Hogan drove in three apiece. In game two, the Cougars swept the doubleheader as sophomore Anisa Reynolds homered, sophomore Makaiya Gomez was a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBIs, and Hogan smashed a double and a home run. 

Game One Recap

The Cougars scored early, pushing a run across in the first and third and three in the second to take a 5-0 lead. In the fifth, SMCC scored seven runs, and Yavapai could only muster two as the Cougars posted a run-rule victory. 

Gomez led SMCC with four hits in the win, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs, an RBI, a stolen base, and a double. Philpot was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. 

Franco went 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs and a double, while Hogan was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, and a run scored. 

Freshman Sarah Potter had a double and was 1-for-2 with a run, two RBIs and two walks, and sophomore Annalise Chavez picked up the team's seventh double and scored a run. 

Freshman Angelica Tello earned the win with a complete-game performance to improve to 12-1. She allowed three hits and two earned runs and fanned four Roughriders. 

Game Two Recap 

SMCC scored four in the first, but Yavapai responded with four in the third to tie the game. SMCC responded with four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 10-5 lead. The Cougars led 12-5 after the top of the fifth, but the Roughriders scored four runs in their half to get within 12-9. SMCC scored four runs in its half and held Yavapai to three to post the 16-12 victory. 

Gomez was a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs, four RBIs, a double, and a walk. Hogan went 3-for-5 with her 10th home run and 12th double, adding three runs and two RBIs. 

Reynolds smashed her 22nd home run of the season and was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Freshman Brianna Garcia was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, and Philpot had two hits and a run. 

Chavez posted a single, a run, an RBI and two walks and freshman Miranda Martinez scored three runs. Franco had two RBIs, and sophomore Jessica Gordon scored a run, stole a base and added an RBI. 

Freshman Adenira Marquez earned the win with two innings of relief in the circle. She struck out two and allowed one earned run to improve to 5-1 on the season. Freshman Mykenzie Flores started the game for SMCC and went 3.2 innings with six earned runs and five strikeouts. 

Tello saw time in relief, and Reynolds got the final three outs to secure the win.
