No. 3 SMCC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Arizona Western

The No. 3 South Mountain Community College softball team (43-8, 37-5 ACCAC) split a home ACCAC doubleheader with Arizona Western on April 22, winning game one 5-1 before falling 21-5 (5 innings) in game two. Sophomore Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete game in the circle, and sophomore Makaiya Gomez went 4-for-4 with a double to lead the Cougars to a game-one victory. The second game saw the Matadors snap SMCC's winning streak with multiple runs in every frame of the five-inning victory. 

Game One Recap

SMCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings after a four-run second. The Matadors pushed across an unearned run in the top of the sixth but could not solve Reynolds. The right-hander improved to 15-3 with seven innings of work, with five strikeouts and zero walks. 

Gomez was perfect at the plate and added a double, two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Annalise Chavez and freshman Vanessa Philpot blasted solo home runs for the Cougars, and freshman Iliana Munoz added a double and a run. 

Freshman Halle Hogan had a pair of singles, and sophomore Jessica Gordon had the team's third stolen base. 

Game Two Recap

The Matadors struck early and often against SMCC pitching in game two to snap the Cougars' 22-game winning streak. Freshman Angelica Tello started for the Cougars and took the loss with 1.1 innings, seven earned runs and two strikeouts. Freshman Mykenzie Flores went 1.1 innings with three earned runs and a walk, and Reynolds tossed the final 2.1 innings with six earned runs and three walks. 

Offensively, freshman Brianna Garcia hit her team-leading 27th home run of the year and finished 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk. Reynolds blasted her 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot. 

Gomez recorded her second double of the year and added a stolen base and a run, and Hogan was 3-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs.
