SMCC Softball Splits on Day Two of NJCAA DII World Series

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ----

The South Mountain Community College softball team (54-9) lost 8-6 to Jones College (MS) and then posted an 8-0 (6 innings) victory over Lansing CC (MI) on day two of the NJCAA Division II World Series at Tyger River Park. Sarah Potter, Iliana Munoz, and Halle Hogan hit solo home runs in the loss to Jones College. In the nightcap against Lansing CC, Munoz went deep twice, Brianna Garcia added a two-run shot, and Anisa Reynolds tossed a complete-game shutout as the Cougars advanced to play on Thursday. 

SMCC will face Des Moines Area CC at 2 pm ET / 11 am Arizona time in an elimination game on Thursday, May 25. The contest can be streamed live on the NJCAA Network. 


Jones College Recap

The Bobcats broke open a 5-4 games with three runs in the top of the sixth. SMCC would answer with single runs in the sixth and the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. 

After Jones College scored a run in the first, Potter tied things up with her ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the second. Jones retook the lead with two in the third, but SMCC responded with a solo blast from Munoz to get within 3-2. 

Jones added two more runs in the fourth and SMCC got within 5-4 after a two-run double from Hogan in the fifth. 

Hogan finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Munoz was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore Annalise Chavez walked twice and scored a run and sophomore Makaiya Gomez added a double. 

In the circle, Reynolds took the loss with 4.1 innings of work. She allowed five earned runs, nine hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts. Angelica Tello tossed 1.2 innings of relief and Mykenzie Flores threw a scoreless seventh inning.


Lansing CC Recap 

The Cougars struck early and often in downing the Stars to survive and advance in the tournament. 

Garcia blasted her 29th home run of the year in the first inning, a two-run shot, to give SMCC an early 2-0 advantage. In the second, Chavez scored on a passed ball to give SMCC a 3-0 advantage. 

In the fourth, Chavez wheeled all the way around the bases after her fly ball to right field was dropped and the throw into the infield went wild. Munoz homered for the first time in the game in the next at-bat to give SMCC a 5-0 advantage. 

In the sixth Vanessa Philpot and Chavez reached ahead of Munoz, and she smashed her 16th home run of the year to end the contest. 

Munoz finished 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs, two home runs and a double. Gomez was 3-for-3 with a run scored, and Chavez walked twice and scored three times. 

Reynolds bounced back with an impressive performance in the circle to improve to 22-4. She scattered three hits and fanned four to post the shutout.
