SMCC Softball Falls Twice at Central Arizona

The South Mountain Community College softball team (12-12, 7-11) lost 12-6 and 6-5 to Central Arizona in an ACCAC doubleheader in Coolidge, Ariz., on Mar. 30. Freshman Taylor Christensen blasted a home run, and freshman Dionna Leanio added three hits in game one, while sophomore Iliana Munoz smacked her team-leading 12th home run of the year in game two. 

Game One Recap

The Vaqueras jumped out to an early 8-1 lead through three innings, but the Cougars fought until the bitter end and fell 12-6. 

Christensen was 2 for 2 with three runs, two RBIs and two walks in the loss. She hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, her fifth of the season. 

Leanio was 3 for 3 with a run, a walk, and a stolen base, while Munoz added an RBI double in the first inning. Freshman Nadia Rascon had the team's second double and drove in a run, and freshmen Azlynn Madrid and Alex Paboucek recorded stolen bases. 

Sophomore Angelica Tello (2-6) took the loss in the circle with five innings of work. She allowed 13 hits, 12 runs (five earned), and four walks with two strikeouts. Sophomore Mykenzie Flores tossed one inning of relief. 

Game Two Recap

The Cougars led 5-3 through five and a half innings, but the Vaqueras rallied for two runs in the sixth and hit a walk-off home run in the seventh. 

Munoz hit a solo home run in the fifth and finished 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs. Leanio also had two hits and scored a run. 

Madrid roped her first triple of the year and scored once, while freshman Brianna Risley added a single, two runs, and a walk. Christensen had an RBI, and Rascon produced a sacrifice fly. 

Christensen (2-5) took the loss in 6.1 innings in the circle. She allowed seven hits, six runs (five earned), and six walks, along with five strikeouts.
