SMCC Women's Hoops Downs Pair at Phoenix College Holiday Tournament

The South Mountain Community College women's basketball team posted a pair of victories at the Phoenix College Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29, 2022. The Cougars defeated Community Christian College 60-47 on Dec. 28 and Justice College 67-31 on Dec. 29 to improve their season record to 7-6. 

Community Christian College Recap

Sophomore forward Genesis Adams led SMCC with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists as the Cougars defeated Community Christian College 60-47 on Dec. 28. Adams finished 9-of-20 from the field and had eight defensive rebounds in the win. 

Sophomore guard Myla Lee was second on the team with 13 points. She added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win. Sophomore guard Star Anderson returned to action and scored five points with two offensive rebounds. 

Freshman guard Hailey Connor posted nine points, a rebound an assist, and Andrea Willeto had four points and six rebounds. Freshman Daziane Stevenson came off the bench to finish with five points, two rebounds and an assist. 

SMCC shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field and grabbed 37 rebounds in the win. The Cougars also had 13 assists and nine steals, leading 31-17 at halftime. 

Justice College Recap

Lee scored 18 points as the SMCC women's basketball team defeated Justice College 67-31 on Dec. 29. She was 8-of-16 from the field and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win. 

Adams was second on the team with 14 points as she was 6-of-14 from the field. She pulled down 10 rebounds, five coming on the offensive glass, and had three assists and a steal. Willeto finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. 

Sophomore center Nyaker Aguek came off the bench to lead SMCC with 11 rebounds, six of which were offensive. She also had four points, a steal, an assist and a block. Freshman forward Kayla Pettet had eight rebounds off the bench and added two points, an assist and a steal. 

SMCC had a season-high 52 rebounds in the win and added 19 assists and 14 steals. The Cougars led 35-13 at halftime in their second win over Justice College this season.
